Azulik Tulum Mexico Hotel Review

Where is Azulik Resort?

Azulik Resort is an adults-only hotel located in the Yucatan Peninsula in Tulum, Mexico. Children are not allowed simply because of the resort’s architecture which has irregular floors and columns. Even as an adult, you have to be present and pay close attention when walking.

Azulik Tulum is not an all-inclusive hotel. You may not have all of the amenities mentioned on your reservation, but meals are not included and any additional services must be paid for separately. There may be a breakfast-inclusive deal depending on the season and the villa you choose. We found that breakfast was included in all rooms when booking through this travel website.

Tulum is 73 miles or 1.5 hours drive from Cancun Airport.  You can get to Azulik by taxi, rental, or airport shuttle bus.  The resort can also arrange for your pick up from Cancun Airport upon request.

Azulik Tulum was founded and designed by Eduardo “Roth”  Neira.   Roth conceptualized this otherworldly resort by keeping the environment in focus and striving to leave no carbon footprint.

We appreciate that Azulik chose to be eco-conscious in a time when every brand is more focused on its bottom line.

We’re unaware of all of Azulik’s business dealings but their mission statement is pointing towards a sustainable future so we’ll take it for now.

Can You Take Pictures In Azulik?

The use of professional DSLR cameras is strictly not allowed at Azulik. However, you can use your phone to take all the photos and videos your heart desires.

Can I Visit Azulik If I’m Not A Guest?

If you’re a guest, you’ll have access to all of Azulik. However, if you’re not a guest, you can only access the beach by purchasing a day pass. Unfortunately, you cannot go to Azulik for free but you can visit Azulik for the day with a day pass. You will not be able to access other parts of the resort. They are pretty strict about this and we’ve seen a few people getting kicked out because they wandered off away from the beach bar.

How Much Is It To Eat At Azulik?

Azulik Tulum Resort has three restaurants Kin Toh (Mayan-Mexican fusion), Tseen Ja (Japanese-Mexican fusion), and Jungle Cuisine with two other gastronomical experiences called Jungle Magik and Mantli. All need prior reservations.

Dinner for one at Kin Toh will cost you $175.00 while Tseen Ja is a-la-carte ($15 – $100).

The Jungle Cuisine restaurant will cost you about $200- $220 per person. Here you can also enjoy a mystical jungle experience and walk through the jungle exploring secret corners of the venue.

As for the Jungle Magik experience, you will need to email them at reservas@uh-may.azulik.com to make reservations. They are open every day from 10 am to 11 pm.

Mantil is a mixology experience open from 7:30 pm to 12 am and also needs to be reserved. You can email them at ‍hostess@tulum.azulik.com

What time does the Azulik Museum open and how to get there?

Azulik Tulum has two museums. One is called Sfer Ik and the other is AZULIK Uh May. Sfer Ik is located at Azulik Tulum Resort while Uh May is about 15 miles away in the village of Francisco Uh May.

Sfer Ik is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Sometimes they may close due to private events so check before you go. There is an entrance fee of $20. You can also book private tours. To do so you will have to contact them via email at info@sferik.art.

AZULIK Uh May is tucked away in the Tulum jungle and people sometimes get lost getting here. We’ve created a map below to help you get there. The entrance fee here is also $20.00.

Azulik Tulum has 4 main experiences apart from the museums. You can enjoy a sunset experience, a tribal gathering experience, a mistikal jungle journey, and a creative journey experience. All need to be reserved in advance as well.

Our Experience – An Honest Review

We stayed at Azulik Tulum for 3 nights. We stayed 2 nights in the Honeymoon room called the Moon Villa and 1 night in the Sky Villa. We had a lovely time in both the villas and it didn’t bother us that the rooms didn’t have air conditioning or electricity for light. You are in the jungle after all. Why not experience it how it’s meant to be experienced?

We had to light candles each night for light and we quite enjoyed it since it felt like a unique experience from the old days. Waseem and I both grew up in the beautiful Fiji Islands so we’re familiar with having to light candles when the lights go out due to a hurricane or a random power outage. We did have a few outlets to charge our electronics though so that was sufficient for us.

The Moon Villa has two levels with one stand-up shower and a cenote bath. We did not even get into the cenote bath since there have been plenty of issues with the poor infrastructure of Tulum as a whole and fecal matter being present in cenotes and cenote water.

There are plenty of articles highlighting this issue if you’re interested in reading further. You’ll see many ‘influencers’ who showcase having a great time in the cenotes and in Tulum but rarely speak about the negative effects that tourism and poor infrastructure have had on the land. We weren’t educated on this issue going in but after coming back from Tulum and researching further into the increase of sargassum on the beach, we learned more about the effects of tourism on Tulum.

The Moon Villa also has an outside dip pool that overlooks the beach and ocean. This was relaxing but keep in mind that this also is cenote water. The best part about the Moon Villa was the private access to the beach and beach bar. This is the only villa with private access to the beach.

The Sky Villa was beautiful as well. The only disadvantage was there was no stand-up shower with filtered water so we had to bathe with cenote water in the tub. This was a bit of a hassle as the soapy water would not drain fast enough.

Our breakfast was superb and the staff at the restaurant was lovely.

The overall service of the hotel staff could have been better as some walk around with more ego than is needed in hospitality.

This was our first time experiencing a treehouse so we were truly excited but looking back now, one can have these experiences for much less. There are plenty of smaller boutique hotels that offer exceptional stay and services that have jungle-inspired designs that are either on the beach or close to it.

In retrospect, would we go back? No, but if it’s your first time going to Tulum and Azulik Tulum is something you want to experience, then there’s nothing better than lived experience and forming your own informed opinion.

In our opinion, you can get a better, more authentic experience staying in Tulum town or away from the beach than on the main strip by Tulum beach.
