Where to Stay in Ninh Binh: My Experience
Before this trip, neither of us had been to Ninh Binh. We’d just come from a couple of busy days in Hanoi and wanted somewhere slower, so we didn’t overthink the planning. We looked at the map, saw that Tam Coc and Trang An were the two obvious options, and had to pick one.
Tam Coc is the easier choice. It’s more built up, with restaurants, cafes, and shops close together, so you can walk almost everywhere. If you don’t want to deal with a scooter, that’s where you go.
We went with Trang An instead. We wanted mountain views right outside our window, not a village street, and we’re comfortable on a scooter, so the lack of walkability never worried us.
We stayed at Ninh Binh Mountain Side Homestay & Cafe for two nights, and it turned out to be exactly what we wanted. The property sits with karst mountains right behind it, the hosts were genuinely lovely, and they set us up with a motorbike for about 150,000 VND a day. That bike turned out to be so helpful. The tradeoff is that you need your own wheels. Restaurants are more spread out, and some homestays sit far enough from the main road that you’ll want to eat wherever you’re staying most nights. We had a scooter, so none of that was a problem, and honestly, waking up to that view every morning made it worth it.

Hang Mua

My quick advice: choose Tam Coc for convenience, choose Trang An for the view, add a Hang Mua sunrise if photography matters to you, and only use Ninh Binh City if you need a practical stop near the train.
Give yourself at least two nights, sort out your scooter or driver situation before you arrive, and leave a little room in your schedule. Some of that scenery is going to make you want to stop the bike and just stare for a while.
