This off-the-beaten-path gem is, surprisingly, only an hour’s flight from Bali’s major tourist destination. It has thus far avoided the madness of Eat-Pray-Love visitors that flood its more well-known neighbor.
However, Sumba may not be off the beaten path for much longer. The travel business is beginning to develop due to the presence of a small number of pioneers in hospitality and social activists who care about the island.
The good news is that this growth has resulted in greater prosperity for a very impoverished and underserved community. The danger is that the rich Sumbanese culture will be destroyed by tourism. Fortunately, you can visit this up-and-coming island with an appreciation of the local way of life while staying mindful and respectful.

Due to its remote location, Beqa Island retains much of its natural beauty. There are five resorts on the island but it’s still largely untouched by tourism.
This makes Beqa Island a great place to visit if you’re looking for an authentic Fijian experience. You can stay in one of the traditional thatched-roof bures, and enjoy the hospitality of the locals.
Beqa Island is a must-see for any traveler visiting Fiji! Some of my (Shafeen’s) family still live in Beqa and we both can’t wait to visit them.

Due to its remote location, the Lofoten Islands remain largely untouched by tourism. This makes it a great place to visit if you’re looking for an authentic Norwegian experience.
The best time to visit the Lofoten Islands is during summer when the weather is warm and there are plenty of daylight hours. If you’re looking for some winter adventure, the islands offer excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities.
