Ninh Binh isn’t a big city, so I wasn’t expecting a huge cafe scene. I was pleasantly surprised. We only managed to sit down at two cafes ourselves during our short stay, but a few locals and our expat friends who actually live in Ninh Binh pointed us toward five more spots they swear by. What Are the Best Cafes in Ninh Binh? My Experience
When I’m traveling, finding a good coffee shop is basically a non-negotiable part of my morning. It doesn’t matter if I’m in a huge city or a tiny riverside town, I’m always on the hunt.
The cafe scene in Ninh Binh is smaller and quieter than what you’ll find in Hanoi, but that’s honestly part of the charm. Most of the cafes here lean into the natural surroundings, with garden seating, wooden decor, and views of rice paddies or limestone karsts instead of the polished, minimalist look you’d get in a bigger city. It’s a nice contrast if you’re coming from a few busy days in the Old Quarter, the way we were.
I like a good cappuccino or a latte, and I’m just as happy with a simple Vietnamese coffee or a coconut coffee on a hot day. I’m not a huge fan of overly sweet blended drinks, so keep my taste in mind as you read through this list. This was the first cafe we sat down at in Ninh Binh, and it set the bar high. Garden Café is exactly what it sounds like: a quiet little garden cafe tucked away from the road, with a genuinely relaxing atmosphere from the moment you sit down.
The real star of the visit was the resident dog, who wandered over almost immediately and basically adopted our table for the whole meal. If you’re a dog person, you’ll love this place just as much for that reason alone.
As for the food, I had the avocado toast with poached eggs, and Waseem went for the smoothie bowl. Both were fresh and beautifully plated. We also ordered an iced matcha latte and a coconut coffee, and honestly, that coconut coffee might be one of the best versions I’ve had anywhere in Vietnam. It’s rich, not too sweet, and really well balanced.
What to Order
If you only try one thing, make it the coconut coffee. The avocado toast with poached eggs is a close second, especially if you want something filling before a day out exploring Trang An.

Under the Tree ended up being my personal favorite cafe in all of Ninh Binh, and I don’t say that lightly. This bakery cafe focuses on healthy breakfast and brunch, with plenty of vegetarian options too, and the vibe alone is worth the trip. Think cozy, chilled, indie music playing quietly in the background, and a menu that reads like it was built for people who actually care about what they’re eating.
We went all in here. I ordered the signature Under the Tree breakfast plate, which comes with two eggs cooked your way, salmon gravlax, avocado, sauteed spinach, tomato, microgreens, and butter on bread. It’s a proper, filling plate, and everything on it tasted incredibly fresh.
We also tried the Tropical Heaven smoothie bowl, loaded with mango, pineapple, banana, coconut milk, passion fruit, chia seeds, coconut flakes, and granola. On the drinks side, we had a mango passionfruit smoothie and a passion lime juice, and both were so good.
What to Order
Honestly, everything. But if I had to pick, go for the signature breakfast plate and the Tropical Heaven smoothie bowl. We will absolutely be back here the next time we’re in Ninh Binh.
